This title is taken from a Nina Simone song. At the time this piece was painted, listened a lot to Nina Simone. I actually painted this painting as a reaction to what I was learning about art history and the lack of black painters or the subjects (they were the slaves or in the shadows). I thought what would a degas look like if he painted a black or brown bather?
